Facebook Ad Placements: Where Your Ads Should Run

Two ads with the same creative, audience and budget can produce very different results depending on where they appear. A vertical video that does well in Reels can struggle in the desktop feed. A detailed static image that converts in Feed may be skipped in Stories. Choosing placements, or deciding when to let Meta choose them, is one of the simplest ways to cut wasted spend.

This guide explains each Facebook ad placement, which campaign goals they suit, and how to manage them in Ads Manager.

What are Facebook ad placements?

Placements are the places your ads can appear across Meta's apps and services: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and the Audience Network of partner apps. You can let Meta choose automatically with Advantage+ placements, or pick them yourself with manual placements.

Why placement matters

Each placement has a different format, device mix and user mindset. Someone scrolling Reels is in a fast, entertainment mode. Someone browsing Marketplace is ready to shop. A desktop user in the right column is more likely to be at work. The wrong placement for your creative or goal usually means:

  • Lower engagement and click-through rates

  • Higher costs per result

  • Weak conversions, or traffic that bounces

  • Budget spent where your audience isn't paying attention

Facebook placement types explained

Facebook Feed

The main feed is still one of the strongest placements for many businesses. Ads appear between posts from friends, pages and groups on mobile and desktop. Feed suits longer messages, product details and lead generation, since people can read and click without feeling rushed.

Facebook Stories

Stories ads are full-screen and vertical, and appear between people's stories. They work for quick, visual messages, limited-time offers and mobile-first audiences. Keep text short and put key information away from the top and bottom edges, where profile icons and buttons sit.

Facebook Reels

Reels ads appear between short-form videos and, in some cases, as overlays on Reels from creators. They reach large, mobile audiences and suit entertaining, native-looking video. Ads that look like a polished TV commercial tend to get skipped. Our article on YouTube Shorts ads covers the same short-form principles on YouTube.

In-stream video ads

In-stream ads play during longer videos on Facebook. Viewers are already watching, so these work for awareness and storytelling. Make sure the ad still makes sense with the sound off.

Facebook Marketplace

Marketplace ads appear among listings while people browse for things to buy. They suit e-commerce and local retailers, especially with catalog ads that show real products and prices.

Search results

Ads can appear when people search Facebook for businesses, products or topics. Reach is smaller, but intent is higher.

Right column ads

Right column ads appear beside the feed on desktop only. They're small and less engaging than mobile placements, but they can be cheap and useful for retargeting people who have already visited your site, particularly in B2B.

Also think about device. If your website is slow on mobile or your offer needs a desktop, such as complex B2B software, your placement mix should reflect that.

Advantage+ placements vs manual placements

Advantage+ placements let Meta show your ads wherever it predicts the best results for your budget. This is Meta's recommended setting, and it often lowers costs because the system can use cheaper inventory when it performs.

Manual placements let you choose exactly where ads appear. Use them when:

  • Your creative only suits certain formats, such as a horizontal video that looks poor in Stories

  • Your reporting shows a placement consistently produces low-quality traffic

  • Brand safety requires excluding certain placements, such as the Audience Network

  • You want to test placements against each other

Our take: start with Advantage+ placements and provide creative in several aspect ratios (1:1 or 4:5 and 9:16) so every placement gets an ad that fits. Then check the placement breakdown after a week or two and exclude only what clearly underperforms.

How to edit placements in Ads Manager

  1. Open Ads Manager and select the ad set you want to change.

  2. Scroll to the Placements section.

  3. Choose Advantage+ placements or switch to Manual placements.

  4. With manual placements, choose devices and platforms, then tick or untick individual placements.

  5. Review the preview for each placement, and customize creative where needed.

  6. Publish your changes.

Editing placements on a running ad set can reset its learning phase, so make changes in batches rather than one at a time.

How to remove a placement

Before removing a placement, check the data. In Ads Manager, open Breakdown and choose By delivery > Placement to compare cost per result, click-through rate and conversions. Remove a placement when it consistently shows:

  • Poor conversion rates or low-quality leads

  • Weak engagement compared with other placements

  • Formatting problems with your creative

  • Traffic that bounces from your website

Give each placement enough spend and time to judge it fairly. A placement with five clicks hasn't told you anything yet.

Building a placement strategy

  • Design for mobile first. Most Meta inventory is on phones.

  • Make placement-specific creative. At minimum, a 4:5 or 1:1 version and a 9:16 version of each ad.

  • Lead with video where possible, with captions and a hook in the first seconds.

  • Track conversions properly with the Meta Pixel and Conversions API.

  • Review placement reports monthly and adjust based on results, not assumptions.

Placements are one part of the picture

Placement choices work best inside a wider plan. Facebook ads often introduce people to a brand; they then search on Google and convert on a fast, well-built website.
