13 Ways to Lower Your Client Acquisition Costs
Winning a new client is expensive. Research summarized in Harvard Business Review puts the cost of acquiring a new customer at anywhere from 5 to 25 times more than retaining an existing one. And for most businesses, the cost of paid acquisition keeps rising as more competitors bid for the same audiences.
Lowering client acquisition cost (CAC) doesn't mean spending less on marketing. It means getting more clients from the same spend. We asked founders and marketing leaders how they've done it. Here are their 13 tactics, and how we'd prioritize them.
How to calculate your CAC
CAC is your total sales and marketing cost for a period divided by the number of new clients won in that period. If you spent $20,000 on marketing and sales in a quarter and won 40 clients, your CAC is $500.
Compare it with what a client is worth over their lifetime (LTV). A common rule of thumb is that LTV should be at least three times CAC, and that you should earn back CAC within 12 months.

1. Build a referral program
Maximillian Naza, CEO of PasciVite, offers existing clients incentives such as discounts, perks or small rewards for referrals. Referred leads cost less, arrive warmer and convert better because they come with trust.
2. Use the "referral and retain" method
Shantanu Pandey, Founder and CEO of Tenet, calls this the RR method: deliver exceptional work so clients refer you, and keep them through proactive account management, consistent communication and ongoing value.
3. Re-engage past customers
Scott Chesarek, Co-Founder of J&S Transportation, wins repeat business by reaching out to past customers when they're likely to need the service again. A customer who shipped a car a year ago gets a friendly reminder before their next move.
4. Form referral partnerships
Aaron Whittaker, VP of Demand Generation and Marketing at Thrive Digital Marketing Agency, builds relationships with complementary service providers who refer clients, and gives them case studies and clear messaging so they can pre-qualify prospects. Partner-referred prospects move through the pipeline faster.
Attract clients without paying for every click
5. Educate your community
Phill Stevens, Founder and CEO of Avail Solar, runs free webinars, workshops and online content that educate people about solar before they buy. Trust builds without a hard sell, and educated customers refer friends and family.
6. Build authority with evergreen content
Brian Hampton, Owner of King SEO Services, creates articles, guides and short videos that address the audience's biggest pain points. That content keeps attracting qualified leads long after it's published, reducing the need for repeated ad spend. See why SEO is a long-term investment.
7. Use hyper-local SEO
Spencergarret Fernandez, Founder and CEO of SEO Echelon, targets local searches such as "best pediatrician in [city]" or "family dentist near [neighborhood]". Spend reaches people nearby who are ready to act. Our local SEO guide walks through the steps.
8. Use user-generated content
Natalia Lavrenenko, UGC and Marketing Manager at Rathly, uses authentic customer videos, posts, testimonials and reviews instead of expensive ad production. In her experience, replacing polished ads with customer content increased conversions and reduced spending.
Spend smarter on paid acquisition
9. Diversify your channels
Gatis Viskers, Founder and CEO of Ambition Digital, doesn't rely on any single channel. Alongside paid ads, the company invests in organic search, email and social outreach. Building those systems cost more up front, but he reports it cut CAC by more than 70% over 12 months.
10. Target high-intent users
Zach Boyette, CEO and Co-founder of Galactic Fed, retargets people who visited high-intent pages such as pricing, demo or sign-up pages without converting, using the Meta pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag or Google Ads remarketing. Lookalike audiences built from converters then find new high-intent users more cheaply than broad targeting.
11. Streamline your outreach
David Case, President of Advastar, refines buyer personas from the company's value proposition and ideal-client traits, then targets the segments most likely to convert now. Retargeting and automated, personalized email sequences handle follow-up.
Convert more of the traffic you already have
12. Optimize landing page conversion
Joey Rahimi, CMO of REALLY, focuses on conversion first, since most traffic is mobile. Lead with benefits, address pain points clearly, and build third-party proof: active social channels, a complete LinkedIn company page and reviews on sites like G2, Google and Capterra. He reports cutting CAC threefold with the same ads on the same channels.
13. Offer risk-free trials
Jason Hennessey, CEO of Hennessey Digital, offers risk-free trials or money-back guarantees to lower the barrier to signing up. Keep sign-up simple, promote the offer everywhere, and follow up with strong service to turn trials into long-term clients.
Where we'd start
If you want to lower CAC this quarter, start with conversion, then retention, then new channels:
Fix your landing pages. Doubling a conversion rate halves CAC on the same traffic. See website optimization challenges.
Cut wasted ad spend. Review search terms, pause non-converting keywords and audiences, and add retargeting for high-intent visitors. Our Google Ads and paid social teams do this as a matter of course.
Ask for referrals systematically. Build it into your process, not just your intentions.
Invest in one compounding channel, usually SEO, so a growing share of clients arrive without a cost per click.
